ESG 경영 교육을 듣고

어제 서관협 부장 교육에서 좋은 교육을 들었다. ESG 경영, 유행처럼 따라하는거라고 하기에는 이 시대에 반드시 지켜야하는 책무가 있고, 이전에 이미 해왔던거라고 말하기에는 무거움이 있다.

사회복지관의 3대기능이 분절되어서 기능할 수 없는 것처럼 ESG의 세가지 영역도 하나의 영역만 생각할 수 없을 것이다. 환경에 대한 인류의 책임은 자연스럽게 사회영역과 어우러지게 되어 있고, 반대로도 그렇다. 또한 지배영역이라 말하는 거버넌스도 잘 작동해야지 환경이나 사회영역이 지속가능하게 작동할 것이다.

소수의 사례를 살펴보고, 몇 권의 책과 칼럼을 읽었을 뿐, ESG 경영에 대해서 깊이 있게 고민해보지는 못했지만, 개인적으로는 거버넌스에 관심을 많이 두고 있다. 코로나 19를 경험하면서 초기에 느꼈던 무려감과 막막함 속에서 사회복지실천 조직의 모습이 좀 더 유연해져야 지속가능하겠다는 고민을 해보았고, 때마침 애자일 조직에 대한 이야기들이 기업과 비영리에서도 등장해서 책을 읽어보기도 했다. 책의 내용이 쉽지는 않았지만, 어렴풋이 사회복지실천 조직들이 애자일하면 좋겠다고 생각했었는데, ESG경영에서 거버넌스가 애자일에서 말하는 것과 같지 않을까 생각했다. 그것은 반영조직과도 같다.

빠르게 변화하는 환경 속에서 알아야 할 제도나 정책, 정보들이 많다. 과거의 경험도 중요하지만, 새롭게 받아들여야하는 것이 많다. 점점 더 따라가기 쉽지않고 이전보다 두서너배의 시간과 노력이 필요해진다. 책임도 부담도 커졌다.  내 삶 속에서의 ESG 경영도 필요해보인다. 내 하루의 삶에서 남게 되는 탄소발자국도 어마어마할 것이다. 내 삶을 조금은 편리에서 멀어지게 해야 될 것이다. 며칠 전 김대근 선생님이 이야기했던 편리보다는 편안을 추구해야한다는 말이 생각난다.

I attended a social welfare ESG management training.

I attended a great training session by Director Seo at the Social Welfare Association yesterday. It is not just a trend to follow like ESG management; it is a responsibility that must be upheld in this era. It is also burdensome to say that it is something we have already been doing. Just as the three functions of social welfare institutions cannot function separately, we cannot think of the three areas of ESG as separate entities. Humanity's responsibility towards the environment naturally intertwines with the social sphere, and vice versa. Similarly, effective governance, which is considered a governing area, must function well for both the environment and the social sphere to operate sustainably.

Although I have only looked at a few cases and read a few books and columns, I have not deeply contemplated ESG management. Personally, I have a lot of interest in governance. Experiencing COVID-19, I realized that the practice of social welfare organizations needs to be more flexible in order to be sustainable, amidst the sense of urgency and uncertainty. At that time, discussions about agile organizations emerged in both profit and non-profit sectors, so I read some books on the topic. The content of the books was not easy, but I vaguely thought that it would be good if social welfare organizations could be agile, and I wondered if governance in ESG management could be similar to what agile organizations advocate. It is also related to reflective organizations. There is a lot of knowledge about the systems, policies, and information that we need to be aware of in a rapidly changing environment. Past experiences are important, but there is also a lot that we need to embrace anew. It is becoming increasingly challenging to keep up, and it requires more time and effort than before. The responsibilities and burdens have also increased. ESG management seems necessary in my own life as well. The carbon footprint that I leave behind in my daily life must be significant. I need to distance myself from convenience and pursue comfort, as Teacher Kim Dae-geun mentioned a few days ago.
